RefundYourSOL vs Phantom Close Accounts
Phantom wallet now lets you close token accounts. But does it find as much SOL as RefundYourSOL? We compare both approaches.
Phantom, the most popular Solana wallet, has added a feature to close empty token accounts directly from the wallet interface. So do you still need an external tool like RefundYourSOL? The answer depends on how much SOL you want to recover.
Quick Comparison
| Feature | RefundYourSOL | Phantom Built-in |
|---|---|---|
| SPL Token Program | Yes | Yes |
| Token-2022 Program | Full support | Limited |
| Burn dust tokens | Yes | No |
| Close accounts in bulk | Yes (dozens per tx) | Limited batching |
| Fee Payer Mode | Yes | No |
| Works with all wallets | Yes (Phantom, Solflare, etc.) | Phantom only |
| Developer API | Yes | No |
| Fee | 15% (matchable to 1.85%) | Free |
What Phantom's Feature Does Well
Phantom's built-in closure feature is convenient:
- No external tools needed — it's right in your wallet
- Free — no fees beyond network transaction costs
- Trusted — you're using your own wallet, nothing external
For users with a handful of empty accounts from the standard SPL Token Program, Phantom's feature works fine.
Where Phantom Falls Short
1. Misses Token-2022 Accounts
Phantom's closure feature has limited support for Token-2022 accounts. If you've traded any tokens that use the newer program (increasingly common since 2023), those accounts won't show up. The SOL locked in them remains invisible.
RefundYourSOL scans both programs and typically finds 15-25% more recoverable SOL in wallets with Token-2022 activity.
2. No Dust Token Burning
Got an account with 0.0001 of some worthless memecoin? Phantom can't close it — the account isn't technically empty.
RefundYourSOL identifies these dust accounts, burns the worthless tokens, and closes the account in one step. For active traders, dust accounts can represent a significant chunk of locked SOL.
3. No Fee Payer Mode
Phantom requires SOL in your wallet to pay transaction fees. If your wallet is completely drained — common after heavy trading — you can't close accounts without first sending SOL from elsewhere.
RefundYourSOL's Fee Payer mode handles this automatically, covering all transaction fees from the recovered SOL.
4. Phantom Only
Phantom's feature only works in Phantom. If you use Solflare, Coinbase Wallet, or any other Solana wallet, you can't use it.
RefundYourSOL supports all major Solana wallets.
5. Limited Bulk Operations
Phantom handles closures in smaller batches. If you have 200+ empty accounts, the process requires many individual approvals.
RefundYourSOL bundles closures efficiently, handling dozens of accounts per transaction — significantly faster for large wallets.
Real-World Difference
We tested a wallet with 189 token accounts using both methods:
| Metric | RefundYourSOL | Phantom |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts detected | 189 | 142 |
| Closeable | 174 | 131 |
| SOL recoverable | 0.355 SOL | 0.267 SOL |
| Time to complete | ~30 seconds | ~5 minutes |
RefundYourSOL recovered 33% more SOL and completed in a fraction of the time.
When Phantom Is Enough
Phantom's feature is fine if:
- You have fewer than 20 empty accounts
- You've only traded standard SPL tokens (not Token-2022)
- None of your accounts have dust token balances
- You have SOL available for transaction fees
- You don't mind doing it manually
When You Need RefundYourSOL
Use RefundYourSOL if:
- You want to recover every last bit of locked SOL
- You have dust tokens that need burning
- You've traded Token-2022 tokens
- Your wallet has zero SOL (need Fee Payer mode)
- You have 20+ accounts to close
- You use a wallet other than Phantom
- You want the fastest possible cleanup
Our Recommendation
Start with Phantom's built-in feature if you want a quick check. Then connect to RefundYourSOL to see if it finds additional accounts. Many users are surprised to discover 30-50% more closeable accounts that Phantom missed.
